Our project is a revolutionary approach to coral reef restoration, combining clean energy with marine conservation. Our system uses low-voltage electrical currents (Biorock technology) powered by marine hydrokinetic turbines to grow corals up to 10 times faster and make them 50 times more resilient to climate change.
Now we can get more funding to expand the reef and get more renewable enery to create a coral garden with many happy fish!

Coral reefs around the world are dying at an alarming rate due to climate change, ocean acidification and destructive human activities. The reefs of the Gili Islands - once vibrant ecosystems supporting marine biodiversity and local livelihoods - are facing severe degradation. Traditional restoration methods are struggling to keep pace with the accelerating damage, while rising sea temperatures are making corals more vulnerable to bleaching. Meanwhile, coastal communities lose both natural storm protection and economic opportunities as reefs disappear.
Our Blue Energy Reef project uses the groundbreaking Biorock technology, which uses low-voltage electrical currents to grow corals up to 10 times faster and increase their resilience 50-fold. By powering this system with innovative marine renewable energy - including AquaGen's hydrokinetic turbines - we are creating self-sustaining underwater habitats. As well as revitalising marine ecosystems, these electrified reefs have the potential to improve carbon sequestration. Our hybrid approach combines cutting-edge science with community training, creating a scalable model for coastal restoration. In November 2023, we installed the world's first marine turbine-powered Biorock reef using AquaGen's Minnow turbine. After a year of monitoring, the results show successful seabed stabilisation and thriving marine colonisation. Now we're upgrading to the Wave Donut system, which combines wave and tidal energy to expand the scale and impact of the project. This continuous supply of blue energy will allow us to create larger, more complex reef structures that can withstand environmental stresses and support greater biodiversity.
